(Mis)Adventures in ICD-10

Dear Patients:

Here is what you are missing.  ICD-10 is a brilliant new system that allows doctors, hospitals, insurance companies, and government agencies improve the quality of care by categorizing problems patients have and reasons they visit the doctor\’s office.  It improves upon the previous system (cleverly named ICD-9) by expanding the number of codes by 500%.  This will significantly raise the morale of medical providers everywhere and will dramatically reduce the cost of care.

Just a glimpse into the ICD-10 shows how to code the all-too-common problem of when people are injured on railway vehicles (which are not streetcars, mind you).  I think it is fitting, when discussing the subject of ICD codes, to start with the area of train-wrecks…

It should be obvious, that to lump streetcar-related injuries would do a great injustice to those millions injured in that setting.  Fear not!  Streetcar advocates get their they desire (but not ones that are drawn by animals)…

  1. i find the terms "initial encounter," and "subsequent encounter," a little disturbing. does the latter designation mean the victim didn’t move out of the way of the horse-drawn vehicle, or the marauding sea lion, and so got an additional "subsequent encounter?" i think once would be enough for me. also the use of the term "misadventure," sounds more like a playground accident than an issue involving "contaminated biological substances." like, "Ooops! Sorry, Mrs. Green, we had a little misadventure in the OR this morning…"

  2. Anticipating the angst of October 1st, we’ve developed and recently released an app that may help alleviate the anxiety related to ICD-10.

You can check it out at http://icd10doc.com
    Your feedback would be appreciated
BTW – is there a code for "Major depression due to ICD-10 implementation" ?
    Thanks
    Dan

    1. "Misadventures" sounds like it was written by a committee comprised of personal injury lawyers and BBC television show developers.

    2. Is there an ICD-10 code for explaining ICD-10 to patients?

    1. Yes. Chronic Nausea:
      Nausea
R11.0 is a billable ICD-10-CM code that can be used to specify a diagnosis.
On October 1, 2014 ICD-10-CM will replace ICD-9-CM in the United States, therefore, R11.0 and all other ICD-10-CM codes should only be used for training or planning purposes until then.
